How Much Does CBT Cost?
CBT is available through several routes at very different price points - free through public services, per-session privately, or as part of a structured online subscription. Here's how they compare.
Free: NHS talking therapies (UK)
In the UK, NHS talking therapies offer CBT at no cost through self-referral, for common concerns like anxiety and low mood. The trade-off is usually a waiting list rather than a fee. Worth checking eligibility and current wait times in your area before ruling it out.
Private in-person CBT
A private CBT practitioner is typically priced per session, similar to general counselling - commonly in a comparable range to private counselling cost in your country, sometimes slightly higher given CBT's structured training requirements. Confirm the practitioner is accredited (e.g. BABCP in the UK) before booking.
Structured online CBT (subscription-style)
Online CBT programmes are usually priced as a weekly or monthly subscription rather than per session, often bundling a full worksheet-based programme with therapist messaging and/or live sessions. See online therapy cost for a real example of what's included at each price tier.
Which is the better value?
It depends on how much live contact you want and how quickly you need to start. A subscription that includes unlimited messaging can work out cheaper per contact-hour than paying per private session, but a short course of free NHS CBT costs nothing if you can accommodate the wait. See online vs in-person therapy cost for the fuller comparison, and CBT vs counselling if you're still deciding between approaches.
